Alex Dodds CONTRIBUTING WRITER + GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Alex Dodds is a communications strategist with more than 10 years of experience leading digital strategy for nonprofit organizations. As an independent consultant she works collaboratively with organizations to think through what, why, and how they communicate to their supporters and allies, and then oversees the strategy, design, and production of whatever tools are necessary to tell their story.

Prior to establishing her consulting practice, Alex was the Open Cities Storyteller at the Sunlight Foundation, part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities, where she told the stories of how cities can use open data to improve outcomes on homelessness, development, traffic collisions and more. Prior to that, she was the Communications Director for Smart Growth America, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping communities across the country build more walkable neighborhoods served by transit. In that role she established communications strategy for many of the organization’s flagship projects, built relationships with partner organizations and allies, organized and led digital events that regularly drew more than a thousand participants, quadrupled the organization’s mailing list, and wrote hundreds of blog posts and email blasts.

Alex holds a BA in American Studies and Graphic Art from Smith College. In 2013, she was included in the class of Next City’s Vanguard, “an annual gathering of the best and brightest young urban leaders working to improve cities across sectors.”
